한국어로 청주 날씨를 묻는 그, 예스맨 (The man who asks about the weather of Cheongju in Korea, YES MAN)

짐캐리, 제가 참 좋아하는 영화배우 입니다.

Jim Carrey, one of my favorite movie stars.

 

사실 제가 그를 좋아하는지도 잘 몰랐는데, 이 영화를 보고나서부터 그의 영화를 보면 항상 마음이 따뜻해진다는 걸 깨달았어요.

Actually, I didn't even know I liked him, but after watching this movie, I realized that watching his movie always warmed my heart.

 

2008년 개봉했으니 벌써 10년도 지났네요.

It's already been 10 years since it was released in 2008.

 

전세계가 미국의 서브프라임 모기지 사태로 힘들어하던 그 해 겨울에 개봉을 했죠.

It was released in the winter of the year when the world was struggling with the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States.

 

저도 2008년을 떠올리면 개인적으로도 힘든 한 해였어요.

When I think about 2008, it was a difficult year for me personally.

 

다니던 직장을 그만두고 새로운 곳으로 이직했지만 문제가 있어 다시 이직을 해야했던...

I quit my job and moved to a new place, but I had to move again due to various problems.

 

지금이야 "그 때 그랬었지"할 수 있지만 당시에는 참 고단하고 힘든 하루하루였습니다.

Now I can say, "It was then," but it was a very tiring and difficult day by day.

 

그런 과정을 겪은 후에 이 영화를 접했죠.

I watched this movie after such hard days.

 

매사에 부정적이던 주인공이 "예스"를 그의 삶에 받아들이면서 발생하는 해프닝...

Happening when the main character, who was negative about everything, accepts "yes" in his life...

 

삶에서 긍정의 힘, 에너지가 중요하다는 것을 다소 과장되고 엉뚱하게 풀어갔지만 저에게는 큰 재미와 감동이었습니다.

It was a bit exaggerated and absurd that positive energy is important in life, but it was a lot of fun and touching for me.

 

저 또한 삶에서 뭔가 새로운 변화가 필요하다고 느끼던 상황이었거든요.

I also felt that I needed a new change in my life.

 

주인공은 단지 변해야겠다는 결심만한 것이 아니라, 그 결심을 삶에서 전적으로 실천하려는 노력들을 합니다.

The main character does not just make up his mind to change, but makes efforts to fully implement the decision in life.

저에게는 그런 모습들이 단지 우스운 에피소드에 그치는 것이 아니라 존경스럽기까지 했습니다.

To me, it wasn't just a funny episode, but it was also admirable.

 

매년 12월이면 누구나 새 해를 향한 새로운 계획을 세우기 좋은 타이밍이잖아요.

Every December is a good time for everyone to make new plans for the new year.

 

그래서 이 영화를 본 후, 2009년부터는 나도 결심하고 실천하는 긍정맨이 되리라고 생각한 교훈적인 영화였다고나 할까요?

So, after watching this movie, I thought that I would become a positive man who makes up my mind and practices from the new year of 2009.

 

그리고 또 한가지 잊을 수 없는 명장면이 있었죠.

And there was another memorable scenes.

 

짐캐리가 한국어 강의를 들으면서 "청주 날씨는 어때요?"를 따라하고 또 불친절한 한국점원에게 한국어로 점잖게 타이르는 장면은 정말 색다른 재미였습니다.

The scene where Jim Carrey diligently imitated "How's the weather in Cheongju?" in Korean and gently admonished an unfriendly Korean clerk in Korean was really interesting.

 

그 때만해도 강남스타일, BTS가 등장하기 훨씬 전이었으니까 한국어를 헐리우드 영화에서 듣는다는게 참 신선했던걸로 기억합니다.

Back then, it was long before Gangnam Style and BTS appeared, so I remember listening to Korean in Hollywood movies was very refreshing.

 

물론, 내용상 한국어를 배운다는 설정이 북한 테러리스트로 오해받는 포인트로 쓰인게 다소 씁쓸하긴 했습니다만...

Of course, it was not pleasant that the setting of learning Korean itself was used as an opportunity for the main character to be misunderstood as a North Korean terrorist.

 

하지만, 영화는 영화일 뿐ㅎㅎ

But the movie is just a movie.

 

요즘은 짐캐리가 통 영화를 안찍는거 같아요.

I don't think Jim Carrey is shooting a whole movie these days.

 

코로나로인해 경제와 삶이 피폐해지는 요즘같이 힘든 시기에 짐캐리표 가슴 따뜻 휴먼 코미디가 많이 그립습니다.

I miss Jim Carrey's heart-warming human comedy a lot these days when the economy and life are devastated by Corona virus.
