개인적으로 우리나라 영화사의 큰 발걸음이라고 생각했습니다만 사람들의 생각은 달랐죠.
Personally, I thought it was a big step in the history of Korean cinema, but people had different opinions.
우리나라 신지식인 1호, 심형래 감독의 SF 장편영화...

지금은 정치평론가를 자처하고 있는 진중권교수가 그 때는 심형래 감독을 어마어마하게 공격했었던 기억이 납니다.
I remember Professor Jin Joong-kwon, who now claims to be a political commentator, attacking Shim Hyung-rae immensely at the time.
그리고 기존 영화계에서도 이 영화를 부정했었죠.
And the film industry had denied this movie.
지금의 정치판처럼 그 때도 이 영화에 대한 찬반으로 나라가 정말 시끄러웠습니다.
Like the current political situation, the country was very noisy with pros and cons of this movie.
참고로 저는 이 영화를 극장에서만 2번 봤습니다.
For your information, I watched this movie twice in the theater.
그 때가 1999년 전후였던가요?
Was it around 1999?
영화를 좋아라해서 다니던 학교를 자퇴하고 지금은 영화쪽에서 열심히 매진하고 있을 고교동창 녀석과 영화를 참 많이 보러다녔던 시절이었네요.
There was a high school classmate who dropped out of university and re-entered film school because he loved movies so much.
It was a time when I watched a lot of movies with that friend.
그 때는 심야영화가 유행이었어요.
It was popular to watch late-night movies.
심야에 영화 3편을 묶어서 저렴하게 상영하는거죠.
It's a low-cost screening of three movies late at night.
그걸 다 재대로 보려면 잠을 푹 자고 오던가 아니면 영화 3편중 타겟으로 1~2편을 골라야해요.
If you wanted to watcy all of them well, you needed to sleep tight before coming or picked one or two movies out of three.
그렇지 않으면 자정을 넘기면서 상영하는 2번째 영화부터 집중력이 떨어지고, 3번째 영화때는 고개가 춤을 추죠.
Otherwise, the second movie, which was playing at midnight, losed concentration, and in the third movie, the head dances.
지금 기억나는 영화 3편의 구성은 이랬어요.

용가리, 매트릭스, 와일드와일드웨스트...
Yongari, Matrix, Wild Wild West...
(이 중에 제일은 메트릭스죠ㅎㅎ)

정말 객관적인 마음으로 영화를 보겠노라, 남들은 뭐라해도 나는 장점을 찾을거다라는 마음으로 영화를 봤죠.
I watched the movie with a very objective mind, and no matter what others said, I would find the merits of this movie.
그런데 영화 내내 관객들의 실소가 들리더니...
But after the movie started, I could hear the audience laughing.
용가리가 등장하는 장엄한 클라이막스 장면에서 외국 배우가 진지하게 "용궤리!"를 외치차 모든 관객들이 박장대소를 하는 겁니다ㅠㅠ
In the majestic climax scene with dragonflies, a foreign actor seriously shouted "Yonggweori!" and all the audience burst into laughter...
아... 많이 아쉬웠어요ㅠ
Oh, it was a shame...
사실, 특수효과는 나름 괜찮다고 생각했지만, 스토리라고 하기에는 다소 빈 구석이 많아서... 점수를 많이는 못 주겠더라고요.
Actually, I thought the special effects were pretty good, but there are a lot of empty corners for a story... so I couldn't give the movie a lot of points.
하지만, 어린이 상대로하는 SF영화를 표방하는 헐리우드 영화도 스토리가 엉성한게 많잖아요.
But Hollywood SF films targeting children also have a lot of sloppy stories.
모두가 열광하는 스타워즈 에피소트 1도 보면 어린 꼬마, 아나킨스카이워커가 우연히 비행선을타고 적진에 들어가서 적을 처부순다? 누가봐도 엉성한 스토리인데요...
If you watch Star Wars Episode I, which everyone is crazy about, a little kid, Anakin Skywalker happens to get on a spaceship and go into enemy territory and destroy them all? It's obviously a sloppy story...
그래서 제가 가진 2가지 생각은 이랬습니다.
So these were my two ideas.
1. "심형래아저씨, 조금만 더 스토리 탄탄하게 만들지 그러셨어요ㅠㅠ"
1. "Sir. Hyung-rae Shim, why didn't you make the story more solid?"
2. "국민 여러분, 조금만 더 너그러운 모습으로 봐주지 그러셨어요ㅠㅠ"
2. "People, why didn't you be more generous?"
